Good News About Our Environment From Around The Globe

I think it’s safe to say that seeing doom and gloom every day on my social media feed is not unique to me. Regardless of my profession, nature has always been at the backbone of the things that bring me joy - a sentiment that I know is imbedded in people from all over the globe with vastly different backgrounds.

Frankly, we need more space in our conversations for positive reflection. We are all striving for change in a vast arena, one that can seem so large at times that it eclipses the measurable progress we’ve made.

We want to start talking about that progress - and celebrating it.

Ready for some good news from around the globe? Lets dive in!

River Otters Are Flourishing In Western North Carolina!

As an avid outdoorsman in Western NC, this is a comeback I have had the pleasure of witnessing personally. Otters were once a thriving species throughout the French Broad River region in the late 1700s and early 1800s. Pollution, unregulated trapping and dwindling resources ultimately lead these sleek “river dogs” being eradicated from the area entirely.

After dedicated environmental efforts, 26 otters were re-introduced to Western NC by the NC Wildlife Resources Commission in the early 1990s. Equal numbers of male and female otters were strategically released and left to re-establish themselves in their traditional environment.

Over three decades later, the French Broad, Catawba, Little Tennessee and Hiwassee River regions are now home to flourishing otter populations. These adaptable creatures have established themselves in Appalachia like they never left, all thanks to dedicated effort by a select group of driven individuals.

The Newest National Park In The US Is Closer (And Cooler) Than You Think

Nestled in the heart of West Virginia stands the continuing result of one of America’s greatest endeavors - our national parks. Covering over 70,000 acres of pristine Appalachian wilderness, the New River Gorge (NRG) serves as a vital sanctuary for countless species of plants and animals.

It’s not just the environmental impact that makes this park amazing, NRG is a top tier destination for outdoor enthusiasts and adventure seekers. You will find world-class whitewater rafting, awe inspiring rock climbing and picturesque hiking. The Endless Wall Trail was voted the best hike in America in 2021!

Or if you want to enjoy the NRG in leisurely fashion, head to Lake Summersville for an endless day on the water.

Protected Public Land In Alabama Is On The Rise!

There has been a 58% increase in protected public access land in Alabama since 2010.

Hikers, bikers, hunters, swimmers - runners in the city and folks just looking for a good walk, Alabama is a great place to spend time outside! Whatever your nature fix is, you’ll likely find it here.

The growth isn’t contained to just adventure sports seekers - the accredited Freshwater Land Trust has partnered with 19 organizations in Jefferson County to form "Champions for Health." Together, they're planning an extensive and interconnected 750-mile network of greenways, bike paths, and trails. This visionary project aims to improve the environment, boost the local economy, enhance community well-being, and encourage healthier lifestyles.
