Black Warrior Riverkeeper Saves Money and Energy with LED lights

BWRK LEDBirmingham – Eagle Solar & Light announces its latest LED light installation at the offices of Black Warrior Riverkeeper, a nonprofit clean water advocacy organization based in Birmingham, Alabama.

“The new LED lights will conserve energy and money, making us better stewards of natural resources and our supporters’ donations,” said Charles Scribner, Executive Director of Black Warrior Riverkeeper. “Morale has also improved among our employees and guests because our office lighting is noticeably better than the flickering fluorescents that previously loomed.”

Previously, Black Warrior Riverkeeper utilized 25 each 2’x4’ fluorescent fixtures with 4 bulbs using 32 watts each, totaling 128 watts per fixture or 3,200 watts total for the office. Due to better lighting and relocation of some fixtures, those 25 were replaced with 17 each 2’x4’ LED troffers, using only 32 watts in each fixture for a reduced 612 watts. LED fixtures also generate less heat to the space, resulting in reduced energy consumption for cooling the space.

Averaging a 40 hour workweek, the electricity reduction equals approximately 5,846 kilowatt-hours less each year. Combined with an estimated 1,322 kilowatt-hours reduction in A/C usage, Black Warrior Riverkeeper will save more than 7,168 kilowatt-hours annually. That means the non-profit could save $1,433 annual on its power bill, or $120 each month. The project will thus pay for itself in less than a year and a half.

“These are really simple lighting conversions that save a bunch of money and energy as well as decrease the amount of maintenance needed,” said Sam Yates, President of Eagle Solar and Light. “LED lights use a fraction of energy of traditional lights and can be dialed in for better quality and experience for workers. There are options for indoors and outside and many different control options available.”
