German Solar Tour Part 6

Here’s what we should expect the Solar Energy Landscape in the United States to look like moving forward…
Lets start by taking a snapshot of that incredibly successful Photovoltaic Industry in Germany.
Today, our travels took us from Rothenburg in Franconia to Dresden in Saxony, part of the former Eastern Bloc held by the former Soviet Union after World War II.
This 250-mile stretch included a veritable smorgasbord of renewable energy. We passed no less than 2000 windmills stretched out around the Autobahn–at times, up to 100 are clearly visible in all directions. Surrounding this Federal Motorway are dozens upon dozens of utility scale Solar Farms!
We traveled from Munich in Bavaria to Rothenburg in Franconia today, through the largest concentration of installed solar power yet!
Field after field of solar arrays–many covering hundreds of acres! There were towns and villages full of rooftop solar, both residential and commercial–some so plentiful that 10 to 12 different structures would be visible at one time! You can view pictures here.
Lets talk about the big picture and compare solar in the United States to that in Germany.
Geography and Population-Germany is slightly smaller than the state of Montana and home to some 81 million people.
The population of the United States is 323 million.
Installed Solar-Germany has been the world’s top PV installer for several years. Total installed solar amounted to over 40 gigawatts (GW) at the end of May 2016.
The United States has about 19 gigawatts (GW) of installed solar capacity.
Electrical Consumption– This comparison is even more disappointing when you consider the fact that the United States consumes Eight Times more energy than Germany.
Solar Insolation– Alabama receives about 1550 kWhours per year, while Southern Germany receives about 20% less. (more…)

What a stunning and clean country–a veritable treasure trove of history, pristine countryside, and magnificent cities!
Our travel takes us from Western Germany, beginning in Frankfurt and the Rhineland, South to the Black Forests of Southern Germany and Bavaria through Munich, and finally North to Berlin.
Germany has been called “The world’s first major renewable energy economy”.
Eight and one-half weeks ago, on Sunday, May 15, 2016 at 2 pm, for the first time ever, renewables supplied nearly all (100%) of domestic electricity demand in the entire country! (more…)
Alabama Environmental Council hopes new solar array can encourage Birmingham market

The Alabama Environmental Council flipped the switch this week on a new 1.5-kilowatt solar power array at the group’s recycling center, located in Birmingham’s Avondale area.
The array, which was donated to the AEC by new Birmingham-area solar installation company Eagle Solar and Light, consists of five 300-watt panels mounted to a bracket on the south-facing roof of the recycling center’s office building.
